Global Issues Honors Consortium

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I plan to study abroad during the fall semester when applications for the program are due.  Can I still apply?

A:  Yes, even if you’re not on campus, you can still apply for the program. Download the application form and guidelines from our website (icgc@umn.edu).  You should also contact the faculty director for your institution to let her or him know you intend to apply and to make any necessary arrangements for an alternate format for the personal interview portion of the application process.

Q:  I’m not a global studies major, and I haven’t had any coursework in global studies.  Am I still eligible for the program?

A:  Of course!  The honors program is an interdisciplinary program and is open to students from any major.  Previous coursework in global studies is not a prerequisite for participation.  However, you must have an interest in global issues and your application to the program should explain how studying global issues in the GIHC will help support your academic goals.

Q:  My major field coursework is demanding and I can’t take a lot of elective credits each semester.  Will I be able to fit the honors coursework into my existing program?

A:  Absolutely!  The GIHC program consists of a single 3-credit course per semester during the academic year plus two summer experiences of approximately 6 weeks each.  Semester-based courses typically meet one day per week.  Students from most majors find they can easily fit the additional course into their existing schedule.

Q:  I would have to delay my graduation to participate in the two-year program.  Should I do this?

A:  In the past, some students have delayed graduation so they could participate in the program (to be accepted as an applicant, you must commit to the full two years).  GIHC program staff will be happy to discuss whether this would be a good decision for you.  Contact your Campus Faculty Director or send an email to icgc@umn.edu to talk about your specific situation.

Q:  Where can I get more information on the program and the application process?

A:  For more information on the GIHC, including application and guidelines, go to www.icgc.umn.edu.  Contact information for the Faculty Directors on each of the participating campuses is also listed with the guidelines.  If you have problems finding the information you need, you can also call 612.624.0832 or send an email to icgc@umn.edu with “GIHC” in the subject line.

Q:  Do I have to be accepted in my school’s Honors Program to participate in the GIHC?

A:  No, you do not have to be a participant in any other honors program to apply for and be accepted into the GIHC.
