Fellowships

ICGC offers six types of financial support for graduate students at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities. See below for links to guidelines and application forms.

ICGC/MacArthur Scholars Fellowships, for incoming students, currently give first-and often fourth-year fellowship support, and the student's home department provides second-and third-year assistantship support. Please note that consideration for MacArthur Scholars Fellowships will only be given to candidates nominated by their academic departments.

ICGC/Mellon Scholars Fellowships, are funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and is a collaboration between ICGC and the Center for Humanities Research (CHR) at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) in Cape Town, South Africa.  ICGC-Mellon Scholars Fellowships support graduate students whose research interests emphasize humanistic and interpretive social science perspectives.  Additionally, nominees are expected to conduct their dissertation research in Southern Africa.  Nominees should have backgrounds and interests which identify them as outstanding students who are clearly committed to the interdisciplinary study of the global south in the context of global change.  We encourage nomination of exceptionally capable students especially but not only from the global south, particularly Africa, and U.S. communities of color.

ICGC/Compton Peace Fellowships provide research support to graduate students from sub-Saharan Africa whose studies and research will address issues of peace, security, and conflict resolution in sub-Saharan Africa, especially in relation to population and environmental concerns. Students must be committed to returning to the region to apply their skills and education. Compton Peace Fellowships are available to both incoming African students and to students currently enrolled at the University of Minnesota in a graduate program. Applications are below.

ICGC Predissertation Field Research Grants and International Internship Grants give short-term, project-specific financial support and are open to current ICGC Scholars.
