Fellowships

ICGC offers fellowships providing financial support for graduate students at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities. See below for links to guidelines and application forms. Nominees should have backgrounds and interests which identify them as outstanding students who are clearly committed to the interdisciplinary study of the global south in the context of global change. We encourage nomination of exceptionally capable students especially but not only from the global south and U.S. communities of color.

ICGC Scholar Fellowships, for incoming students, typically give first-and often fourth-year fellowship support. The student's home department is expected to guarantee support in the form of 50% teaching or research assistantships in the second and third year of study, and tuition and health insurance benefits for four years. Please note that consideration for ICGC Scholar Fellowships will only be given to candidates nominated by their academic departments and that award terms vary.

ICGC Mellon Scholar Fellowships, are funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and are a collaboration between ICGC and the Center for Humanities Research (CHR) at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) in Cape Town, South Africa. ICGC-Mellon Scholars Fellowships support graduate students whose research interests emphasize humanistic and interpretive social science perspectives. Additionally, nominees are expected to conduct their dissertation research in Southern Africa.

ICGC Compton International Fellowships provide research support to graduate students from sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America whose studies and research will address issues of peace, security, and conflict resolution in those regions, especially in relation to population and environmental concerns. Students must be committed to returning to the region to apply their skills and education. Compton International Fellowships are available to both incoming students and to graduate students currently enrolled at the University of Minnesota.

In addition to these fellowships, ICGC offers small grants for its currently affiliated students.  ICGC Pre-dissertation Research Grants and International Internship Grants give short-term, project-specific financial support and are open only to current ICGC Scholars.
