The Interdisciplinary Center for the Study of Global Change (ICGC) comprises the following programs:

The MacArthur Interdisciplinary Program on Global Change, Sustainability and Justice

The MacArthur Program, seeks to foster an interdisciplinary and cross-cultural community of faculty and graduate students committed to studying global change, especially as seen in the developing world; addressing issues of peace, conflict, security, social and environmental change, justice, human rights, development and international cooperation. The study of these issues is also extended to the United States and other developed countries. Research and training focus on four major themes:

  • War and peace in historical context, represented by national and global security issues
  • Global governance and transnational norms
  • Environmental sustainability and social justice
  • Production, performance and representation of identities

The MacArthur Program provides intellectual and financial support for over one hundred graduate students in several colleges of the University of Minnesota. The Program also provides enabling grants to graduate and professional students for international internships and predissertation fieldwork in the developing world as part of their training programs. Interdisciplinary faculty-student seminars and workshop series are organized around major theoretical, comparative and methodological issues related to the developing world; and formal public lecturesa and informal discussion series are presented by scholars, policy makers and activists addressing issues related to themes of the Program. In addition, the Program offers a graduate minor for ICGC Scholars in Development Studies and Social Change.
